I’ve been enjoying the comments on my last post about why I hate dresses. So many kindred spirits! Plus a lot of great suggestions about different ways to enjoy skirts and dresses. But really, I love the affirmation of being true to one’s personal style. It’s taken me a long time to even admit that I *have* a style, let alone to trust myself about it.

Here, then, is an example of a piece of clothing that I absolutely love. I have not shelled out the $200 to buy it, but for two years now, I regularly visit the Anatomie website to gawk at it again.

Empire Waist Dress

I love the clean lines, the profile, the sportiness. I love the whole outfit, in fact, though I gravitate more to colors than to black. This is an outfit and an attitude I would love to “own.”

(PS. I love almost everything Anatomie sells — I just can’t justify spending that much money on what looks like workout clothes… but maybe I should.)

  1. Mm, very nice. Not ever having seen you in person, I can't comment on how appropriate it might be for your physique, but … It's stylish, feminine, obviously comfortable, and the zip-away top/pants combo makes it the perfect outfit for "throwing down" in the event you're ever attacked while shopping by ninjas.

  2. Hey Jenn — just happened across this site today and thought of you: Athleta. It seems to be in the Gap family of clothes, on the sporty end, but they've got some quite nice patterns and many items that made me think "I could see Jenn wearing this." They all look really comfortable to wear. I think they'd be well-suited to your body, and possibly even your tastes. So I'm passing it along! As dresses go, these seem like good, inexpensive options to wear for those times when you want to look casually nice but never know if the vampires will attack and you'll need to kick some ass.

  3. PS. Which is not to say that you in any way "should" wear dresses if you don't want to! Just: if you do want/need to, you might as well have one or two that feel easy and comfy to wear.

  4. Karen, Athleta is a homerun for me! I love a lot of their stuff! Not sure it’s dressy enough for trying to look like an adult at work, but you know what? Screw it. Thanks so much for the pointer!!!
